September 20th, 2010
“You’re the best Wedding DJ I’ve ever seen” a guest at a wedding said to me this weekend.
I asked him why he’d said that, as I honestly found it hard to believe. He said “You respond to the crowd.” It seemed simple enough to me, while a song was fading out, I heard the groom, who was flinging his shirt around a crowd of easily 50 guests on the dance floor say “All the single ladies…” So naturally I immediately stopped the song that was queued and played “Single Ladies” by Beyonce- Something I believe every DJ should be ready and willing to do. But the reality is that they don’t.
This same wedding I was experiencing pain in my lower back, a condition that has plagued me since February of 2010 at random times. My spinal specialist tells me there is nothing that can be done to prevent or predict when this condition occurs, which is a degeneration of the supportive discs in the spine. If these discs rupture, the pain is severe enough to prevent me from even standing, much less performing. The bottom line is that I can’t conceive of what would happen at a wedding if this occurred. So it is time to stop.
It is mostly because of this unpredictable nature that my wife and I have decided to stop accepting new clients or contracts until a way to deal with this problem can be found. While I certainly hope this is not an end to more than a decade of service, it does mark the temporary end to DJ the DJ as a business for now. I will be liquefying all assets and attempting to sell the domains dj-the-dj.com and djthedj.com
Fortunately, I have no outstanding contracts today, so this is the time to exit. I may continue to do some special events such as Father/Daughter dances with the assistance of another DJ, but the nature of my condition will not allow me to safely use contracts for any event.
If you have a need for a qualified Event Host, however- I would ask that you contact me to refer you to several of the DJs in the Loveland/Fort Collins area that I trust.
I will continue in the industry for now as a consultant and may soon offer wedding coordination and design services, as well as production of memories packages and many other services that my condition will not prevent me from performing.
I humbly thank all of you for your support and patronage over the years, and I hope that God will allow me to serve you again in the future.
Sincerely,
-DJ Eshelman (aka DJ the DJ)
